Measurement tip

Measure the packed bag, not the empty shell

Use the widest outside points of the bag. A soft backpack may compress, but the checker does not assume compression or ignore an oversized edge.

CabinFit checks all six possible orientations

A bag listed as 40 x 30 x 20 cm may still fit a 30 x 40 x 20 cm airline rule when it can be turned. The result is still a dimensional check, not a guarantee of acceptance.

What counts as a carry-on?

A carry-on — also called a cabin bag or hand luggage — is the larger cabin bag that rides in the overhead bin. Most airlines publish a maximum size around 55 x 40 x 20 cm, and many add a weight limit between 7 and 15 kg.

The catch is the fare, not the bag: on many low-cost carriers the overhead bag is not part of the basic ticket and comes with a priority bundle or a paid add-on. Check the size and what your fare includes before you board.

Common questions before you pack

In Europe the most common published limit is 55 x 40 x 20 cm; US carriers typically use 22 x 14 x 9 in (about 56 x 36 x 23 cm). There is no universal standard, so always check the airline you actually fly with.

Yes. Airlines measure the outside of the packed bag including wheels, handles, and side pockets — exactly what the gate sizer frame measures.

Not always. Many low-cost carriers include only a small underseat bag with basic fares, and the overhead carry-on requires a priority bundle or an add-on. Full-service carriers usually include both bags.

If the bag does not drop into the sizer at the gate, expect a gate fee that usually costs more than adding the bag in advance. Any side within 1 cm of the limit is a gamble.
